A shorter reach starts with a modular layout.

Once the work area was defined, the next decision was how to arrange the tools around it. Packing everything tightly together would save space, but it could still leave the wrong tool between your hand and the next task.

For PyroDock, modularity is a way to organize a workflow. Each position has a role, while the separable controller allows the display and controls to sit where they suit the user.

Follow the tool-to-tool transitions

We mapped a simple working sequence: position the component, apply flux, solder the joint, clean the tip, and return the iron. Each transition suggests a relationship between two positions.

Flux and solder should be easy to find during a joint. The cleaning positions should be close to the iron rest. Spare tips should be visible when the task changes. Tweezers and bits need storage that does not consume the central work area.

Reduce detours, not just distance

The aim is the shortest practical pickup path for the task. A nearby tool is not convenient if reaching it crosses the hot iron, catches a cable, or interrupts access to the project. We therefore treat reach, clearance, and return position as one layout problem.

This is a design goal rather than a claim of a mathematically optimal layout. Hand preference, project size, and sitting position all affect what feels natural.

Give the controls their own position

The separable control panel helps keep the display readable while the main workstation remains close to the task. The mechanical damping pivot supports adjustment of the working angle.

These choices serve different needs: the panel addresses visibility and posture; the pivot addresses orientation. Together, they make the arrangement more adaptable without leaving the tools scattered across the bench.

Make returning a tool as easy as finding it

A defined home reduces the decisions needed to reset the workspace. The result we are designing toward is a repeatable loop: pick up, use, clean, return.

With that loop established, we could make the final selection: which nine essentials belong in the workstation?
